Stockholm University faculty serve on the Nobel Prize committees for Physics, Chemistry, and Economic Sciences. Professors who evaluate the world's most important scientific discoveries also teach your courses and lead research groups you can join.
More than 100 bachelor's and master's programmes taught entirely in English — spanning natural sciences, social sciences, law, and humanities — with no requirement to speak Swedish to begin or complete your degree.
With 1,300 doctoral candidates and internationally recognised research groups in quantum physics, climate science, molecular biology, environmental law, and sociology, SU undergraduates can access genuine research environments from early in their studies.
The campus sits in parkland adjacent to Djurgården, connected to central Stockholm by metro in under 20 minutes. You get a genuine campus community without being cut off from one of Europe's most dynamic, multilingual capital cities.
Non-EU/EEA students pay approximately USD 13,000 per year in tuition — significantly lower than comparable research universities in the UK, US, or Australia. EU/EEA students pay nothing. Sweden's public infrastructure and part-time work opportunities reduce the real cost further.
Sweden leads globally on environmental policy. SU's programmes in Environmental Science, Geography, and Law place students at the centre of live policy debates — and graduates enter a labour market where sustainability expertise commands a premium.
Stockholm University is not a brand-name shortcut. It is a place for students who want rigorous inquiry, genuine research engagement, and intellectual independence — in a city and country that consistently rank among the world's best for quality of life, innovation, and social cohesion.
Overall acceptance rate across all programmes — individual programmes vary significantly
Stockholm University Admissions Requirements —
32 points is the published minimum; competitive programmes require higher
Higher-Level grades in relevant subjects carry the most weight
Extended Essay and TOK grades contribute to your Diploma total
All qualifications converted to a Swedish merit score for ranking
Sweden's admissions system is grade-first: your IB Diploma total, A-Level profile, or equivalent qualification is converted into a standardised merit score. Places are allocated by ranking applicants on this score. There is no holistic review — your grades are the primary admission instrument.
IELTS Academic minimum 6.5 overall (no band below 5.5)
Exempt if prior education was entirely in English
All programmes at Stockholm University require certified English language proficiency from applicants whose previous education was not in English. The minimum is IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 — competitive master's programmes often expect higher.
Many programmes require specific subjects (e.g. Maths for Economics/CS)
Check prerequisites on each programme page — missing one disqualifies you regardless of grade
A-Level and IB subject combinations must match programme prerequisites
Motivation letter required for some competitive master's programmes
Unlike US universities, SU does not admit to a general college — you apply to a specific programme. Each programme lists required subjects. An otherwise strong applicant without the required prerequisite subject is ineligible.
Grades, English & Programme Prerequisites
Stockholm University Application Components — universityadmissions.se & Documents
Online Application — universityadmissions.se
All international applicants apply through Sweden's national admissions portal at universityadmissions.se — not through Stockholm University directly. You create a profile, list up to 20 programme choices in priority order, and upload your documents. The portal opens in mid-October for the following autumn's entry.
Certified copies of your secondary school or bachelor's transcripts, and your final diploma or leaving certificate. Documents not in English or Swedish must be officially translated. IB students upload their predicted grade certificate before results and their official Diploma transcript once issued.
IELTS Academic (minimum 6.5) or TOEFL iBT (minimum 90) for non-native English speakers. Some programmes set higher internal requirements. If your entire previous education was conducted in English, you may be exempt — verify the exemption criteria on universityadmissions.se.
Required for many master's programmes and some competitive bachelor's programmes. Submitted separately to the department — not via universityadmissions.se. Format, length, and deadline are specified on each programme's own admissions page. Typically 500–1,000 words.
Professional or research master's programmes may require a CV documenting relevant work experience, research involvement, or technical skills. Use a clean European-format CV. Check the programme page for exact requirements before preparing your document.
Non-EU/EEA students pay an application fee of approximately USD 85 (SEK 900) to universityadmissions.se. EU/EEA citizens are exempt from both the application fee and tuition fees. The fee is non-refundable and paid when you submit your application.
Non-EU/EEA students accepted to Stockholm University must apply for a student residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). Processing takes several months — begin immediately after accepting your offer and paying any required deposit. EU/EEA students do not need a permit.
Stockholm University applications are submitted through universityadmissions.se — Sweden's centralised national admissions portal. The process is grades-based; for most programmes, your academic documents and English test score are the complete application. Some competitive programmes add supplementary requirements.
This is an academic document, not a life narrative
A Stockholm University motivation letter is closer to a research statement than a US personal statement. SU faculty respond to applicants who demonstrate serious engagement with the intellectual content of the programme — not general ambition or personal storytelling.
Reference the specific programme curriculum
Read the programme's course list and faculty research profiles before writing a word. The highest-signal thing you can do is demonstrate that you know what this programme actually studies and explain why those specific questions matter to you.
Check whether a letter is required at all
Many SU programmes — particularly at bachelor's level — admit entirely on grades. Writing a motivation letter for a programme that doesn't ask for one is wasted effort. Always read the programme's admissions page first.
Most motivation letters are submitted directly to the department — not through universityadmissions.se. The submission method and deadline are programme-specific. Sending to the wrong address before the deadline is effectively not submitting.
Stockholm University Application — The Motivation Letter
No standardised prompt — you apply through universityadmissions.se, a grades-based national portal. No personal statement is required for most programmes.
Departments typically ask: describe your academic background, your research or professional interests, and your reasons for choosing this specific programme. Approximately 500–1,000 words.
Motivation Letter (Competitive Programmes)
Why this programme — specifically? Not why Sweden, not why university, but why these particular intellectual questions addressed by this department.
Core Question Every Motivation Letter Must Answer
Some research-intensive programmes ask you to describe relevant research experience, academic projects, or extended essays that demonstrate engagement with the field.
Some master's programmes ask how the degree connects to your career or research aspirations. Be specific and plausible — not generic.
Submitting a generic motivation letter about ambition and passion without demonstrating genuine engagement with the specific intellectual content of the programme.

Writing Strategy — What SU Faculty Want to Read
What Stockholm University Looks For in Applicants
The Swedish admissions system is transparent and grade-based. Your IB Diploma total, A-Level profile, or equivalent is converted into a merit score and ranked against all other applicants. The minimum is IB 32 points, but competitive programmes admit significantly higher profiles.
Every programme at SU lists required subjects. Without the prerequisite subject — such as Mathematics HL for Economics or Computer Science — you are ineligible regardless of your overall grade. Check prerequisites before choosing your IB or A-Level subjects.
IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 is the floor for English-taught programmes. For competitive research-intensive master's programmes, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100 is a more competitive benchmark.
Intellectual Focus (Motivation Letter Programmes)
For programmes that require a motivation letter, SU faculty value applicants who demonstrate a clear, well-grounded intellectual rationale for their choice. Precision about why this programme addresses questions you genuinely want to explore outweighs generic career statements.
For research master's programmes and some competitive bachelor's programmes, evidence of prior academic engagement — an IB Extended Essay on a relevant topic, research internship experience, relevant published work — strengthens the application.
While the Swedish merit score system is primarily a snapshot of your final grades, departments reviewing motivation letters do consider academic trajectory and engagement over time. Consistent improvement and intellectual deepening over your secondary school career is a positive signal.
Stockholm University's admissions system is primarily algorithmic and grade-based. However, for programmes with supplementary selection criteria, the department reviews applications holistically. Understanding both levels of evaluation is essential for a competitive application strategy.

All USD figures are approximations converted from SEK. Exchange rates fluctuate. Verify current fees in SEK on su.se and universityadmissions.se.
Swedish students have access to CSN student loans and grants — one of the most generous student finance systems in the world. EU/EEA students may become eligible for CSN under specific conditions. Non-EU/EEA students must primarily self-fund or secure competitive scholarships such as the Swedish Institute Scholarship.
EU/EEA students study at Stockholm University tuition-free. Non-EU/EEA students pay approximately USD 13,000 per year — significantly below comparable research universities in English-speaking countries. Sweden does not operate a needs-based financial aid system for international students comparable to US Ivy League universities.

Spring Round Opens (universityadmissions.se)
Highest number of places available — most competitive programmes fill in Round 1
Maximum time to sort housing, residence permits, and travel
More programme choices open in Round 1 vs Round 2
Allows time to appeal or seek alternative options if not admitted
IB predicted grade certification can be used for Round 1; final results confirm in summer
Requires strong predicted grades — final results not yet available at submission
January deadline falls during a busy academic period
Less time between application open (October) and deadline (January)
If deferred to Round 2, programme availability narrows significantly
Swedish Application Rounds — Round 1 vs Round 2 Strategy
Sweden's admissions system has two rounds for the Autumn semester. Round 1 (January deadline) is the primary entry point for international students — most places at competitive programmes are filled here. Round 2 is a secondary round for remaining places.
Apply in Round 1 (15 January deadline) if you are at all serious about your preferred programme. Most competitive programmes — Law, Economics, Computer Science, Environmental Science — fill entirely in Round 1. Waiting for Round 2 at Stockholm University is not a strategic choice; it is a significant disadvantage.

Does Stockholm University Interview Applicants?
This is your closest equivalent to an interview — write it as you would speak: precise, honest, intellectually engaged. A well-written letter does the work that a Harvard alumni interview does.
The Motivation Letter (for applicable programmes)
Some research master's programmes or scholarship selection processes involve an informal discussion or video call. If contacted for one, prepare to discuss your academic background and research interests specifically — not generic motivations.
Informal discussion (research master's / scholarship)
For doctoral programmes at SU, supervisors often communicate directly with prospective candidates. If you are interested in a PhD, make contact with potential supervisors before the formal application.
PhD Supervisor Contact (Doctoral applicants only)
Stockholm University does not conduct formal interviews as part of its undergraduate or taught master's admissions process. Admission is determined by merit score ranking on universityadmissions.se. For the vast majority of applicants, there is no interview — your academic documents, English language test, and (where required) motivation letter are the complete application.

Highly competitive — among Sweden's hardest to enter
Stockholm University's Faculty of Law is one of Sweden's two most prestigious law faculties. The main LL.B. programme is taught in Swedish. Some English-taught master's programmes in international and European law are available for international students. Admission to law at SU is among the most competitive in Sweden.
SU's research groups in quantum physics, climate science, molecular biology, and computational linguistics actively involve advanced undergraduates. Contact faculty members directly to enquire about participation — there is no formal undergraduate research programme comparable to the US model, but motivated students gain research access through direct outreach.
SU's main student union represents students in university governance, organises social events, and runs services including the student pub, sports groups, and professional networking events. Membership gives you a voice in how the university is run — student influence in Swedish higher education governance is substantial.
Swedish universities maintain a student nations system — historic student societies organising academic dinners, pub evenings, cultural events, and community activities. SU students can join any Stockholm-area nation. Nations are a uniquely Swedish student experience and an effective way to build a social network across the city.
Stockholm University library reading room
One of Sweden's largest research libraries, with extensive physical collections and digital access to academic databases. Study spaces are open late during exam periods. The library runs academic skills workshops, research support sessions, and one-on-one consultations with subject librarians — valuable for students coming from educational systems with less research library integration.

Career Outcomes & Graduate Prospects from Stockholm University
Ericsson, Spotify, H&M, Volvo, IKEA, and Swedish multinational banks actively recruit SU graduates. Natural science graduates enter biotech, environmental consultancy, and academic research. Stockholm's growing tech startup ecosystem absorbs computer science and data-focused graduates.
Swedish government ministries, the EU institutions in Brussels, the United Nations, the World Bank, and international NGOs regularly recruit from SU's social science and law programmes. Sweden's foreign policy orientation creates strong demand for internationally-minded graduates.
Public Sector & International Organisations
SU is a strong launching pad for postgraduate study — many graduates pursue master's and doctoral programmes at SU itself or at top European universities. The Nobel Prize faculty connection provides research credibility that opens doors at competitive PhD programmes worldwide.
Stockholm University graduates enter a Nordic labour market with one of Europe's lowest unemployment rates and a premium on analytical, research-trained, and sustainability-literate candidates. The graduate employment rate of 85% reflects both the quality of SU's training and Sweden's robust, diversified economy.
Our Stockholm University Admissions Track Record
My IB score was above the minimum, but I had no idea how the Swedish merit conversion worked or what the competitive benchmark actually was for Environmental Science. Tychr walked me through exactly what I needed and helped me write a motivation letter that spoke directly to the department's research priorities. I was admitted in Round 1.
MSc Environmental Science — Stockholm University
The application to SU seemed simpler than US universities — just grades and a portal. But getting the prerequisite subject check wrong nearly cost me my place. Tychr caught that my IB Maths SL didn't meet the Economics HL prerequisite and helped me restructure my IB choices in Year 11. Ended up with an offer to my first-choice programme.
Stockholm University's motivation letter requirement was harder than I expected. I'd been trained to write US-style personal statements and kept writing about my passions and experiences. Tychr's coach helped me understand that SU wants intellectual precision, not personal narrative. The final letter was a completely different document — and it worked.
MSc International Relations — Stockholm University
Do EU/EEA students pay tuition at Stockholm University?
No. Students who are citizens of EU/EEA countries, or who hold a permanent residence permit in Sweden, pay no tuition fees. Only non-EU/EEA international students pay tuition — approximately USD 13,000 per year depending on the programme.
What language are programmes at Stockholm University taught in?
Stockholm University offers over 100 programmes taught entirely in English at bachelor's and master's level. Some programmes — particularly at bachelor's level and in the Faculty of Humanities — are taught in Swedish only. Always check the individual programme's language of instruction before applying.
Do I apply directly to Stockholm University or through a portal?
You apply through universityadmissions.se, Sweden's national admissions portal — not through Stockholm University directly. Create a profile, upload your documents, list your programme choices in priority order, and pay the application fee (non-EU/EEA only).
Is the GRE or GMAT required for master's programmes?
Stockholm University does not require the GRE or GMAT for admission to its taught master's programmes. Some business-related programmes may consider GMAT as supporting evidence, but it is not mandatory. Confirm with each specific programme page.
How competitive is admission to law or economics at Stockholm University?
Both are among the most competitive programmes in Sweden. Admission is by merit score, and admitted students typically present IB scores or equivalent qualifications significantly above the 32-point minimum. If these are your target programmes, apply in Round 1 and research the grade profiles of recent admitted cohorts on universityadmissions.se.
How do I get a Swedish residence permit as an international student?
Non-EU/EEA students must apply for a student residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) after receiving an offer of admission and paying any required deposit. Processing can take several months — begin immediately after receiving your offer. EU/EEA students do not need a permit.
Is housing guaranteed for international students?
No. Stockholm University's Student Housing service provides some university-managed accommodation at Lappkärrsberget, but demand outstrips supply. Apply immediately after accepting your offer and explore private rental through Blocket or Stockholm-area student housing networks in parallel.
Some programmes accept spring entry, but the English-taught selection is much smaller than for autumn entry. Most international students plan for an autumn start (15 January application deadline). Check universityadmissions.se for which programmes admit spring intake.
Getting into a competitive programme at Stockholm University is not just about having the right IB score — it is about applying in the right round, to the right programme, with the right prerequisites, and (where required) a motivation letter that speaks to the department.

Stockholm University Academic Requirements — The Honest Breakdown for International Students
What grades, qualifications, and subject profile do you need to gain admission to Stockholm University? How does Sweden's merit-score system evaluate IB, A-Levels, and other international qualifications? And what does 'selective' actually mean at SU?
The honest picture: Stockholm University does not use a GPA in the US sense. The Swedish admissions system converts your final secondary school qualifications into a standardised merit score (Meritvärde), then ranks all applicants for each programme by that score. Admission goes to the highest-ranked applicants until places are filled.
IB Diploma minimum for general consideration
Stockholm University and Grades — How the Merit System Works
A score of 32 IB points is a floor, not a competitive target. For the most popular programmes in law, economics, and computer science, the admitted cohort's profile is substantially higher. Research the merit score cut-offs for your target programme — universityadmissions.se publishes the previous cycle's admission statistics.
International students from IB, A-Level, and other recognised systems are evaluated using established conversion tables. SU has well-developed procedures for translating international qualifications into the Swedish merit framework. Higher-Level grades carry more weight than Standard-Level grades in the IB conversion.
How international qualifications are converted
Unlike US holistic review, the Swedish merit system takes a snapshot of your final grades rather than evaluating trajectory. This means your predicted and final IB grades are the primary academic instrument — there is limited opportunity to explain or contextualise a weaker performance. This makes strong Year 12-13 performance critically important.
Why final grades are everything in the Swedish system
The Swedish admissions system is transparent by design — results are published so every applicant can see the merit score cut-off for every programme in every cycle. This gives international students unusual visibility into how competitive their profile actually is.
Every programme on universityadmissions.se lists the admission cut-off merit score from the previous cycle. These scores reflect the grade profile of the last admitted applicant — if your merit score is above the cut-off, you are likely to be admitted; below it, you are unlikely to be. This is meaningfully different from US admissions, where the boundary between admitted and rejected applicants is invisible.
Some popular programmes have their own supplementary selection criteria — typically a motivation letter, CV, or work sample. These are evaluated by the department after the universityadmissions.se stage and add a qualitative dimension to what is otherwise a purely quantitative process.
When qualitative review enters the process
How Stockholm University Reads Your Academic Record — Transparency and Cut-offs
Non-Swedish international students applying through universityadmissions.se are assessed in a separate quota that may have different cut-off scores from domestic applicants. Check the separate international applicant statistics for your programme — the domestic cut-off is not the correct reference point.
International applicant quota — a critical detail
Stockholm University does not require or consider SAT scores. Sweden's admissions system is not part of the US standardised testing framework. If you are applying from an international school that offers the US curriculum, your SAT score has no role in your SU application.
SAT Scores at Stockholm University — Not Applicable
For STEM-focused programmes at SU, the relevant signal is your Mathematics subject grade at IB Higher Level or A-Level — not an SAT Math subscore. Mathematics HL (or equivalent) is a formal prerequisite for programmes in economics, computer science, and the mathematical sciences.
If you are an international student who has prepared for the SAT as part of a broader US university application strategy, that preparation has no direct bearing on your SU application. Focus your remaining academic energy on maximising your IB or A-Level final grades.
The SAT is not part of the Swedish admissions framework. Your academic profile for SU applications is entirely determined by your secondary school leaving qualification — IB Diploma, A-Levels, or national equivalent. English language proficiency is demonstrated separately through IELTS or TOEFL.
Stockholm University does not require or consider ACT scores. The ACT is a US-specific standardised test with no role in the Swedish higher education admissions system.
ACT Scores at Stockholm University — Not Applicable
Neither the SAT superscore policy nor the ACT composite has any relevance for SU applications. The equivalent of a 'test score' at SU is your IB Diploma total or A-Level grade combination — and those are evaluated as final results, not superscored across sittings.
Grades in your leaving qualification (IB Diploma, A-Levels, national equivalent) are the primary academic metric at Stockholm University.
English proficiency is assessed via IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT — separate from your academic qualification.
There is no Swedish equivalent standardised test for international applicants — the SweSAT (Högskoleprovet) is for domestic applicants only.
What replaces SAT/ACT in Swedish admissions
International students applying to SU from a US-curriculum school should focus all testing energy on English language tests (IELTS or TOEFL) and on achieving strong IB or AP scores — not on optimising SAT/ACT scores for this application.
Tychr's recommendation for US-curriculum students
Stockholm University is effectively 'test-free' for international applicants in the sense that no standardised entrance exam is required or accepted as part of the admissions process. The Swedish admissions system relies entirely on secondary school leaving qualifications and, for non-native speakers, English language proficiency tests.
Stockholm University Test Policy — No Entrance Exam Required
International applicants are assessed on their secondary school leaving qualification (IB Diploma, A-Levels, or national equivalent) and their English language test score. No entrance exam, aptitude test, or writing test is required for standard undergraduate or taught master's admission.
Your IELTS or TOEFL score — required for non-native English speakers. Submit your best score that meets or exceeds the minimum.
Your certified academic transcripts and leaving certificate — the primary academic document.
Your motivation letter, if the programme requires one — this is the closest thing to an essay component in the Swedish system.
SAT or ACT scores — not relevant and will not be considered.
GRE or GMAT — not required for most SU taught programmes.
SweSAT (Högskoleprovet) — only relevant for Swedish-system applicants.
Some international students apply to SU expecting to supplement a weaker academic record with a strong standardised test score. This strategy does not work in Sweden. The merit score is derived entirely from your leaving qualification grades — there is no alternative academic metric to strengthen the application. Strong grades are the only path.
The IB conversion table for Swedish admissions gives credit for the full Diploma score. Higher-Level subjects carry more weight. If you are applying to a science or quantitative programme, HL Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches preferred) and HL Sciences are both an advantage and often a prerequisite.
HL grades contribute more to the merit conversion than SL
Grade contributes to Diploma total; A or B signals research capability
Check each programme — many require specific HL subjects
A-Levels are accepted and well-understood. Three A-Levels are typically required, with grade equivalencies assessed against Swedish grade thresholds. A-Level candidates should ensure their subject combination aligns with programme prerequisites — Mathematics A-Level is required for most quantitative programmes.
Assessed against Swedish merit conversion table
Generally not counted separately; full A-Levels required
IB Diploma and A-Levels at Stockholm University — Specific Benchmarks
AP (Advanced Placement) courses and scores are a US-curriculum construct. Stockholm University does not have a formal AP credit system and does not use AP scores as an admissions factor. For students at international schools with AP curricula, the relevant academic evidence for SU is the overall school transcript — not individual AP scores.
AP scores are not part of the Swedish merit conversion. Your school transcript and leaving certificate grades are the primary academic document. AP scores may provide supporting context but have no formal role in the merit score calculation.
If you are at a school that offers both AP and IB, the IB Diploma is the stronger credential for Swedish admissions — it produces a full Diploma score that converts cleanly into the merit framework.
Unlike US universities, SU does not award course credit for AP scores. All students begin from the SU programme curriculum regardless of prior AP study.
AP Courses at Stockholm University — What Role They Play
Stockholm University does not award course exemptions for AP scores. Students who have completed AP courses in relevant subjects arrive better prepared but do not receive formal credit.
International students at schools that offer only AP should focus on maximising their final school transcript grades — the transcript, not the AP score sheet, is the primary admissions document for Swedish universities.
Stockholm University evaluates your academic record in the context of your school system and the qualifications available to you. The merit score conversion is standardised, but the choice of which subjects to study at Higher Level or A-Level carries real weight — particularly for programmes with subject prerequisites.
Rigour of Your Secondary School Record — What It Means at Stockholm University
Choosing the most challenging and relevant subjects available to you — particularly at Higher Level — and performing strongly in them.
Unlike the US system, where 'rigour' is a holistic evaluative criterion, SU's merit conversion is algorithmic. However, which subjects you chose to study at HL or A-Level directly affects your eligibility for programmes with prerequisites and signals your academic ambition to departments evaluating motivation letters.
Rigour at SU means: (1) satisfying the prerequisite subject requirements for your chosen programme; (2) choosing HL subjects aligned with your programme's quantitative or scientific demands; (3) achieving strong grades in those demanding subjects rather than optimising for a safer GPA in easier options.
An IB student applying to Economics at SU who took Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL has a materially stronger application than one who took Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL — not because of a holistic impression, but because the former meets the prerequisite and the latter often does not.
Stockholm University has no explicit academic prerequisites for admission to all programmes — entry requirements vary by programme and faculty. However, competitive programmes have demanding academic expectations that go well beyond the minimum.
What Stockholm University Expects — Academic Preparation by Field
Mathematics HL (Analysis and Approaches) is strongly recommended — and a formal prerequisite for Economics, Computer Science, and the mathematical sciences. For physics and astronomy, HL Mathematics and HL Physics are both expected. Competition mathematics experience is a differentiating signal for the most competitive programmes.
HL Biology and/or HL Chemistry for life sciences programmes. HL Physics for physics and astronomy. Strong SL science grades are a secondary signal — HL in the relevant science is expected for competitive STEM programmes. Research experience (school projects, IB Internal Assessments, lab internships) enhances the motivation letter.
No formal programming prerequisite exists for the bachelor's Computer Science programme, but mathematical maturity is essential. Students who can demonstrate programming experience or logical problem-solving ability through their background are better prepared for SU's CS curriculum.
Stockholm University requires certified English language proficiency from all applicants who have not completed their previous education in English. The minimum standards are set at the national level for Swedish higher education.
English Language Requirements at Stockholm University — Tests and Thresholds
The minimum scores are floors, not competitive targets. For research-intensive master's programmes with selective intake, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100 is a more realistic competitive benchmark. If you are borderline, a stronger language score can provide a meaningful edge where programmes review applications with supplementary criteria.
Exempt (if full prior education in English)
Applicants who completed their IB Diploma entirely in English at an accredited international school may be exempt from the language test requirement. Check the exemption criteria on universityadmissions.se carefully — the exemption is not automatic and depends on the school's language of instruction and accreditation.
Stockholm University admits to specific programmes — not to a general faculty. The academic requirements below reflect the typical profile expected for competitive entry to each programme area. Check individual programme pages on su.se for formal prerequisites.

Academic Requirements by Programme — What Each Field Expects
Well understood and directly integrated into the Swedish merit conversion system. The IB Diploma total (out of 45) is converted using a published table. HL grades carry more weight than SL. The EE and TOK grades contribute to your Diploma total. Swedish admissions offices are experienced IB readers.
Accepted and converted using established equivalencies. Three A-Levels are the standard. Grade A corresponds to the highest Swedish grade; the full scale is mapped. Subject prerequisites at SU use A-Level subject names directly. AS-Levels are generally not counted as full qualifications.
Accepted with country-specific evaluation procedures. Universityadmissions.se publishes a country-by-country guide to how national qualifications are assessed. Students from major secondary systems (French Baccalaureate, German Abitur, Indian CBSE, Chinese Gaokao) can check their specific conversion on the portal.
American high school diplomas combined with strong AP scores or SAT Subject Tests may be accepted, though the AP-to-merit conversion is less direct than IB or A-Levels. Students on the US curriculum applying to SU should contact universityadmissions.se for specific guidance on how their credentials are assessed.
Accepted and evaluated. Students completing the Indian Class XII board examinations (CBSE or ISC) apply through universityadmissions.se. The portal provides specific conversion tables for Indian qualifications. CBSE PCM stream students are typically well-positioned for science and economics programmes if their overall board percentage is strong.

Building an Academic Profile for Stockholm University — Year by Year
Academic Mistakes That Cost Stockholm University Applications — And How to Avoid Them
If you lack a required subject — for example, Mathematics HL for Economics or Computer Science — you are ineligible regardless of your overall grade. Check programme prerequisites before finalising your IB subject choices in Year 10-11, not after submitting your application.
Applying without checking subject prerequisites
The most competitive programmes at SU fill entirely in Round 1 (January deadline). Students who apply in Round 2 (April deadline) face a dramatically smaller selection of remaining places in their target programmes.
Applying in Round 2 for a competitive programme
IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 is the minimum, not a comfortable target for competitive programmes. For selective master's programmes, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100 is a meaningfully stronger position. A score that just clears the minimum can be a disadvantage in departments using supplementary selection criteria.
Submitting a minimum-threshold English language score
A generic motivation letter — written about ambition and passion without engaging with the specific intellectual content of the programme — is immediately recognisable to SU faculty and materially weakens an otherwise strong application.
Most SU motivation letters are submitted directly to the department — not through universityadmissions.se. Sending your letter to the wrong address, or missing the department's separate deadline, means it is not received.
Submitting the motivation letter through the wrong channel
Unlike US applications, there is no opportunity to contextualise your grades or explain a weaker performance to an admissions officer. Your merit score is what it is. A weak semester in Year 12 that pulls down your predicted grade can be determinative.
Assuming you can explain away a weak academic record
The following profiles represent the academic backgrounds of students Tychr has supported in gaining admission to Stockholm University. They illustrate the range of preparation that works and the factors that strengthened each application.
Academic Profiles of Stockholm University Applicants Tychr Has Supported
HL Mathematics AA (7), HL Physics (6), HL Biology (6). IELTS 7.5. Applied to BSc Physics. Prerequisites fully satisfied. Admitted in Round 1.
Profile 1 — Natural Sciences (BSc Physics)
The key differentiator was satisfying both the Maths HL and Physics HL prerequisites with strong grades. The application needed no motivation letter — merit score was sufficient.
HL Economics (7), HL Mathematics AA (6), HL English (7). TOEFL 102. Applied to MSc Economics. Motivation letter focused specifically on the department's macroeconomics research group and the student's undergraduate thesis topic.
The motivation letter was the deciding factor at a master's programme with supplementary selection. Engaging with specific faculty research was the critical choice.
A-Levels: Chemistry (A*), Biology (A), Mathematics (A). IELTS 7.0. Applied to MSc Environmental Science. CV documented a relevant summer research placement.
Profile 3 — Environmental Science (A-Level applicant)
A-Level applicants are evaluated using conversion tables that treat strong grades equivalently to IB performance. The summer research placement strengthened the motivation letter substantially.
IB 32 is the published minimum. For general-entry programmes, this may be sufficient. For competitive programmes in Economics, Law, or Computer Science, the admitted cohort typically has a significantly higher profile. Check the merit score cut-off statistics for your specific programme on universityadmissions.se.
Is IB 32 enough for Stockholm University?
No. Stockholm University does not require SAT, ACT, GRE, or GMAT for undergraduate or most master's programmes. Admission is based on your leaving qualification (IB, A-Levels, etc.) and your English language test score.
Do I need to take the SAT or GMAT for Stockholm University?
Higher-Level grades carry more weight than Standard-Level grades in the IB-to-Swedish-merit-score conversion. For most competitive programmes, HL grades in relevant subjects are also prerequisites. SL Maths is insufficient for programmes requiring Mathematics as a prerequisite.
Does the level of my IB subject (HL vs SL) matter for SU?
Most undergraduate and taught master's programmes at SU do not require a motivation letter — grades alone determine admission. Motivation letters are required primarily for selective master's programmes and some competitive bachelor's programmes with supplementary selection criteria. Always check the specific programme page.
Do I need a motivation letter for every programme at SU?
Yes, with a documented prior work experience requirement for some programmes. EU/EEA students may also access Swedish student finance (CSN) under specific eligibility conditions. Confirm CSN eligibility at csn.se before planning your budget around it.
Can I work while studying at Stockholm University?
Fully funded option for eligible non-EU students
Studying at Stockholm University — The Full Cost Picture for International Students
EU/EEA students study at one of the world's top-200 research universities for zero tuition. Non-EU/EEA students face real but manageable costs — significantly lower than comparable universities in the UK, US, or Australia. Here is the complete, honest cost picture.
What Stockholm University Actually Costs — Annual Breakdown
Stockholm University Cost of Attendance — Annual Estimates (USD, Non-EU/EEA)
Living costs (housing, food, transport, personal)
Stockholm University's total cost of attendance for non-EU/EEA students (approximately USD 26,000 per year) is substantially lower than comparable research universities in the UK (often USD 35,000–45,000 per year) or the US (often USD 60,000–90,000 per year). For EU/EEA students, the comparison is even more striking — zero tuition at a top-200 global research university.
EU/EEA citizens pay no tuition — only living costs apply.
Estimated total annual cost including tuition and living expenses.
All USD figures are approximations converted from SEK. Tuition fees are set in SEK and vary by programme — science and medicine-adjacent programmes may be higher. Verify current fees in SEK on su.se.
Stockholm University's Financial Aid Policy — What International Students Can Access
Non-EU/EEA students admitted to Stockholm University are not eligible for Swedish state student finance (CSN) under standard conditions. The university does not operate a comprehensive needs-based aid system comparable to US Ivy League institutions. Institutional scholarship options exist but are limited and competitive.
Limited Institutional Aid — External Scholarships Are the Primary Route
EU/EEA students are in a fundamentally different position: zero tuition, and potential eligibility for CSN student finance if they meet the eligibility conditions (generally related to prior employment or family connection to Sweden). Non-EU/EEA students must self-fund or secure competitive external scholarships.
Stockholm University does not operate need-blind admissions in the US sense. Financial need does not affect the admissions decision — the merit-score system ranks applicants purely on academic qualifications. However, unlike Harvard, meeting demonstrated need is not a university policy.
EU/EEA vs Non-EU/EEA: A Fundamental Difference
Non-EU/EEA students must demonstrate proof of sufficient funds to the Swedish Migration Agency as part of the residence permit process. Typically this means demonstrating access to approximately SEK 10,714 per month (check the current figure on Migrationsverket's website) for the duration of your studies.
Sweden's tuition-free model for EU/EEA students is funded by the Swedish state, not by a university endowment. The Swedish government views higher education as a public good and funds university operations through direct state grants. This model produces a fundamentally different cost structure from US research universities.
Sweden introduced tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students in 2011. Before this, all students — including international students from outside Europe — studied free of charge. The current fee structure reflects a political decision to distinguish between EU/EEA students (covered by EU free movement principles) and non-EU/EEA students.

EU/EEA Annual Tuition at Stockholm University
"Higher education in Sweden is a public good, funded by society for the benefit of all — a conviction that shapes our cost structure and our values."
Swedish Higher Education Model — Ministry of Education Context
EU/EEA students pay no tuition at Stockholm University. The full cost of their education is covered by the Swedish state. This makes SU one of the most cost-effective top-200 research universities in the world for European students.
Confirm citizenship or residence status with respect to EU/EEA
EU/EEA citizens: no tuition applies — proceed to housing and living cost planning
Non-EU/EEA citizens: tuition applies — proceed to scholarship and funding research
Your fee status is the first critical determination. EU/EEA citizens pay no tuition. Non-EU/EEA citizens pay approximately USD 13,000 per year.

How to Fund Your Studies at Stockholm University — Step by Step
Student with laptop researching scholarships
Financial aid at Stockholm University is not automatic and not institutionally comprehensive for non-EU/EEA students. Here is the complete process for identifying and securing funding.
Non-EU/EEA students face a fundamentally different financial situation at Stockholm University compared to EU/EEA students. Understanding this clearly before applying is essential for realistic planning.
No institutional needs-based aid for non-EU/EEA
Stockholm University does not operate a comprehensive needs-based financial aid programme for non-EU/EEA students. There is no equivalent of Harvard's CSS Profile process or 'meets full demonstrated need' policy. Non-EU/EEA students are expected to be financially self-sufficient or to secure external scholarships.
The Swedish Institute Scholarship — the primary route
The SISGP is the primary fully-funded scholarship pathway for eligible non-EU/EEA students at Swedish universities. It covers tuition, a monthly stipend, travel, and insurance. It is highly competitive and limited to students from designated countries. Visit si.se for current country lists, amounts, and application timelines.
A limited number of Stockholm University programmes offer partial or full tuition waivers to outstanding non-EU/EEA applicants, assessed as part of the admissions process. Check the specific programme page — these are programme-specific and not available across all departments.
EU/EEA students who pay no tuition may become eligible for Swedish student finance (CSN loans and grants) if they meet specific eligibility conditions related to prior work or connection to the Swedish labour market. Check the current CSN rules at csn.se — eligibility conditions change periodically.
Financial Aid for International Students at Stockholm University
Full tuition + living + travel + insurance
What Financial Support Actually Looks Like at Stockholm University
There is no income-band aid table for Stockholm University equivalent to Harvard's needs-based formula. Aid is categorical: EU/EEA pays nothing; SISGP scholarship holders are fully funded; a small number of SU merit scholarships reduce tuition for outstanding non-EU/EEA applicants; all other non-EU/EEA students self-fund.
Aid amounts vary. SISGP amounts and eligibility change annually — verify at si.se. Programme-specific scholarships are not available at all departments. EU/EEA CSN eligibility conditions change — verify at csn.se.
For self-funded non-EU/EEA students, the total annual cost is approximately USD 26,000 (USD 13,000 tuition + USD 14,000 living). Over a 3-year bachelor's or 2-year master's, this represents approximately USD 78,000 or USD 52,000 total — substantially below equivalent programmes in the UK or US.
Stockholm University's primary institutional scholarship offering is merit-based, not needs-based. A small number of competitive programmes offer tuition waivers or partial scholarships to outstanding applicants admitted to specific master's programmes.
Unlike Harvard's needs-based grants, SU's institutional scholarships are merit-based — awarded to academically outstanding applicants regardless of financial need. They are competitive, limited in number, and not universally available across all programmes.
The Swedish Institute Scholarship is the most significant funding opportunity. It is fully funded (tuition, living costs, travel, insurance) and genuinely needs-based in the sense that it targets students from developing countries who have strong leadership potential. This is a Swedish government scholarship — not an SU institutional award.
The Swedish Institute Scholarship — the exception
Some SU programmes include a scholarship assessment as part of the admissions process. If this applies to your programme, you do not need to submit a separate scholarship application — the scholarship is considered automatically alongside your admission.
For EU/EEA students, zero tuition is the effective equivalent of a full-cost academic scholarship. The 'scholarship' for EU students is structural — built into Sweden's higher education funding model.
The EU/EEA tuition waiver as de facto scholarship
Scholarships at Stockholm University — What Exists and Who Qualifies
While SU's own scholarship offerings are limited, several external scholarships support international students studying at Stockholm University. These vary by country of origin, field, and level of study.
External Scholarships for Stockholm University Students
Tychr's scholarship research: as part of every Stockholm University application programme, Tychr identifies external scholarship opportunities relevant to the student's country of origin, intended field, and level of study. This guidance is provided alongside application strategy support.
Scholarship stacking at SU: unlike Harvard's policy of adjusting institutional grants when external scholarships are received, SU does not operate an institutional grant to reduce. External scholarships supplement your own funding directly. The SISGP is a separate contract and may have its own stacking rules — check with the Swedish Institute.
Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP)
Fully funded — tuition, living costs, travel. For eligible developing-country applicants. Highly competitive. si.se
Mobility grants for EU students participating in Erasmus exchanges at SU; applies to exchange students, not direct-entry students
For Chinese citizens; covers tuition and provides a living stipend at approved universities including SU
Government/bilateral scholarships (home country)
Many countries fund students studying at internationally ranked universities abroad. Check your home country's ministry of education or national scholarship body
Country-specific government scholarships: many governments offer funding for citizens studying at recognised universities abroad. Sweden's QS ranking of #153 and its membership of major international academic networks make SU eligible for a wide range of bilateral scholarship programmes. Tychr maintains awareness of major country-specific scholarship programmes for its Stockholm University applicants.
Sweden has one of the world's most generous student loan and grant systems — but it is primarily designed for Swedish citizens and qualifying EU/EEA students. Non-EU/EEA international students at Stockholm University are generally not eligible for Swedish student finance (CSN) and must fund their studies independently.
CSN (Centrala studiestödsnämnden) provides student loans and grants to Swedish citizens and qualifying EU/EEA residents. The typical package includes a grant component (approximately 30%) and a low-interest loan component (approximately 70%). As of 2024, the total CSN disbursement is approximately SEK 10,714 per month for full-time students.
What CSN provides Swedish and qualifying EU students
EU/EEA students may become eligible for CSN if they have worked in Sweden for a sufficient period before or during their studies, or have a sufficiently close connection to the Swedish labour market. Eligibility conditions are specific and change — check csn.se for current rules before planning your budget on this basis.
Most non-EU/EEA international students at SU are not eligible for CSN. Self-funding and external scholarships are the primary routes. Some non-EU students who have worked in Sweden on other permits may qualify — this is uncommon and should be verified individually.
Non-EU/EEA students may work without restriction on hours during the validity of their student residence permit. Working 10–20 hours per week during term and full-time during holidays is feasible and commonly done. Swedish language skills significantly improve part-time employment prospects in Stockholm.
Student Loans in Sweden — What International Students Need to Know
Unlike Harvard's formal work-study programme (a component of the financial aid package), Stockholm University does not have a structured on-campus work-study system. However, part-time employment is widely accessible to international students in Stockholm and is an important supplement to funding.
Working While Studying at Stockholm University
Research assistant positions — contact faculty directly; available primarily in Year 2+
University library and administrative roles — posted on SU's internal job board
Student nation roles — nations employ members in their events, bars, and administration
Retail and hospitality in central Stockholm — accessible with basic Swedish
Tech and startup sector in Stockholm — accessible with English, especially for CS students
Tutoring and teaching assistance — informal or through SU departments
Non-EU/EEA students with a valid student residence permit may work without a separate work permit during the validity of their permit. There is no formal hour restriction mandated by Swedish law for students, though practically most manage 10–20 hours per week while studying full time. EU/EEA students have unrestricted right to work in Sweden.
Part-time work in Stockholm at 15–20 hours per week can generate approximately SEK 5,000–8,000 per month net, covering a meaningful portion of living costs. Swedish work experience also strengthens your post-graduation employment prospects in the Nordic market.
Part-time work is entirely optional and not a formal component of any SU financial package. It is a practical supplement for students managing living costs — particularly valuable given Stockholm's high cost of living relative to other European student cities.
Stockholm University vs Other International Universities — Financial Aid Comparison
Unlike US ED applications, there is no strategic cost to applying to Stockholm University 'early' (Round 1). Applying in Round 1 is always recommended — it maximises your chance of admission to competitive programmes without any financial aid comparison risk.
For EU/EEA students, Stockholm University offers exceptional value: a top-200 global research university at zero tuition. For non-EU/EEA students with solid self-funding capacity, SU's cost of approximately USD 26,000 per year compares favourably to UK or US alternatives. For students dependent on full scholarships, the SISGP is the primary pathway — and it is highly competitive.
Stockholm University (non-EU/EEA, 3yr BSc)
Stockholm University vs Alternatives — What You Actually Pay
Total cost comparison over full degree (bachelor's unless noted)
For non-EU/EEA students, Stockholm University's 3-year bachelor's totals approximately USD 78,000 — less than two years at a typical UK international fee rate and less than one year at a full US Ivy League sticker price. For EU/EEA students paying nothing in tuition, SU is among the most cost-effective top-200 research universities in the world.
Stockholm University does not operate a financial aid appeals process comparable to Harvard's CSS Profile reconsideration. However, if you have been admitted and face unexpected financial difficulty, several routes exist to seek support or reduce your cost burden.
What to Do If You Face Financial Difficulty at Stockholm University
The honest note: Stockholm University's institutional support for non-EU/EEA students facing financial difficulty is limited. The most effective strategies are preventive — securing funding before you arrive — rather than remedial. Apply for the SISGP and home-country scholarships before accepting your offer.
Contact the International Admissions Office at Stockholm University to discuss your situation
Ask about emergency student welfare funds or emergency loans available through the student union (Studentkåren)
Contact the Swedish Institute if you are a SISGP applicant who was waitlisted — places sometimes become available
Speak to the Student Welfare service about short-term support options available to enrolled students
Your family financial circumstances changed materially after you accepted your offer
Your home currency depreciated significantly against SEK, making your costs substantially higher than planned
You did not receive a scholarship you were planning on and need to explore alternatives
You are facing a genuine hardship that prevents you from continuing your studies
Student welfare support at SU: the student union (Studentkåren) operates a welfare function and can direct students to available support. Stockholm University's student welfare service provides counselling, financial guidance, and in limited cases emergency assistance. Response times and outcomes vary — contact as early as possible if financial difficulty arises.
Determine whether you are EU/EEA (tuition-free) or non-EU/EEA (tuition applies). If you hold citizenship that includes an EU member state, you may qualify for fee exemption. Clarify with universityadmissions.se. This single determination changes your total cost picture dramatically.
Research the Swedish Institute Scholarship
If you are from an eligible country, the SISGP deadline typically falls in November for the following autumn's entry. Visit si.se to confirm your country's eligibility, the current scholarship amounts, and the application requirements. Do not leave this research until Year 13.
Research your home government's scholarship programmes for students studying abroad at internationally ranked universities. Stockholm University's QS #153 ranking qualifies it for many bilateral scholarship schemes. Contact your ministry of education or national scholarship body.
Build a full annual budget: tuition (USD 13,000 if non-EU/EEA, USD 0 if EU/EEA) plus living costs (approximately USD 14,000 for Stockholm). Verify the current SEK figures on su.se — the USD conversion fluctuates. Ensure you have access to sufficient funds before applying for your residence permit.
Apply for student housing immediately after offer
Housing is your largest living cost variable. Apply to SU's Student Housing service immediately after accepting your offer. Simultaneously register with SSSB (Stockholm's student housing agency) and explore private rental in parallel. Early action here can save you significant money.
Prepare proof of funds for residence permit
Non-EU/EEA students must demonstrate sufficient funds to the Swedish Migration Agency. Check the current monthly support requirement on migrationsverket.se. Begin the residence permit application immediately — processing takes several months and must be completed before your programme start date.
Planning for Stockholm University Costs — What to Do and When
Applying to Stockholm University — What You Write and Why It Matters
Sweden does not use a Common App, UCAS, or supplemental essay system. Admission to most programmes at Stockholm University is determined entirely by your academic grades. Where written work is required — the motivation letter — it plays a different role from a US personal statement. This guide explains both realities honestly.
Stockholm University Application Requirements — The Full Picture
Stockholm University applications are submitted through universityadmissions.se — Sweden's national centralised admissions portal. The system is grade-based: for most programmes, the process involves no personal statement, no essays, and no written narrative at all. Where supplementary written work is required, it takes the form of a motivation letter submitted separately to the department.
Required by professional and research master's programmes. Reverse-chronological, two pages maximum, European format.
Required by some humanities, journalism, or creative programmes. Format and length specified on each programme's admissions page.
Submit your programme choices, academic documents, and English test score through the national portal. No personal statement or essay is required at this stage.
Required by some master's programmes and selective bachelor's programmes. Submitted directly to the department — not through universityadmissions.se. Always check the specific programme page.
Writing the Stockholm University Motivation Letter — What It Needs to Accomplish
A Stockholm University motivation letter is not a personal statement. It is primarily an academic document — closer to a research statement than a life narrative. Its purpose is to demonstrate that you have thought seriously about the programme's intellectual content and are genuinely prepared for its demands.
Generic career statements about ambition, passion, and making a difference
Extended personal narratives about life experiences unrelated to the academic field
Paragraphs about Sweden's quality of life, Nobel Prizes, or sustainability credentials — the faculty knows you applied to a Swedish university
Letters that are clearly adapted from a different university's statement with surface changes
Specific intellectual or research questions the programme addresses that you want to explore
A clear and honest account of your academic preparation and how it connects to the programme
Evidence that you have read the programme curriculum and understand what you are applying for
Realistic and plausible articulation of your direction — research, career, or further study
The motivation letter must be written specifically for the programme — not adapted from a generic version used across multiple applications. SU departments are small academic communities; faculty recognise generic language immediately. The letter that gets you admitted is the one that could only have been written by someone who genuinely read the programme description.
Identify 2–3 specific intellectual questions or research themes the programme addresses. Do not write about the subject in general — write about the specific aspect of the field this programme focuses on. Read the department's research group pages and recent publications.
Connect your IB Extended Essay, relevant Internal Assessment, or research project to the programme's themes. A specific prior academic experience — even at secondary level — that connects to the programme is far more persuasive than general enthusiasm.
Articulate where this degree leads you, specifically and honestly. You do not need a fixed career plan — but your stated direction should be coherent with the degree's profile and your background. Vague aspirations ('I want to contribute to society') read as filler.
Choosing Your Motivation Letter Angle — The Decision That Shapes the Document
The right motivation letter angle is always programme-specific. But these principles apply across all Stockholm University faculties and determine whether your letter strengthens or merely accompanies your application.
At Tychr, we begin every SU motivation letter with a structured 60-minute consultation exploring the student's genuine academic interests, prior study highlights, and the specific intellectual content of their target programme — before a word of the letter is written. The right angle almost always differs from the student's first instinct.
Generic 'I have always been passionate about this subject' openings without intellectual specificity
Sweden-specific framing ('I want to experience Nordic culture') — irrelevant to academic content
Listing achievements from your CV without connecting them to the programme's intellectual demands
Any angle that would work equally well for a different programme or a different university
No standardised verbatim prompt exists across SU. Departments typically ask you to explain your academic background, research or professional interests, and reasons for choosing this specific programme.
This is the most important element of any motivation letter. Avoid generic answers. Name specific courses or modules in the programme, specific faculty research areas, or specific methodological approaches you want to engage with. The more concrete your answer, the more convincing it reads.
Departments typically ask applicants to describe relevant academic preparation and prior study.
Describe the specific parts of your previous education — IB Extended Essay topic, relevant coursework, research projects, or independently pursued reading — that prepare you for this programme. Do not just list qualifications; explain what you learned and why it connects to your proposed study.
Some departments ask how the programme connects to your professional or research aspirations.
Be specific and honest. Academic goals (PhD, research career) and professional goals (policy work, industry role) are both valid. What matters is that your stated direction follows logically from your background and connects plausibly to the degree's outcomes. Avoid sweeping statements about impact — the faculty responds to intellectual precision.
Certain professional or research master's programmes request a CV documenting relevant work experience, research involvement, or technical skills.
Use a clean, reverse-chronological academic CV. Two pages maximum. Include education (with grades if strong), relevant work or research experience, language skills, and any relevant academic publications or presentations. Follow the European CV format — not a US-style résumé. Do not include a photo unless specifically requested.
Supplementary Application Documents at Stockholm University
Where Stockholm University programmes require supplementary written work, it takes the form of a motivation letter and sometimes a CV. There are no Harvard-style supplemental essay prompts and no Common App-style short answers. Here is what the written component actually involves.
How to Write a Strong Motivation Letter for Stockholm University
The structure below works across most SU faculties. Adjust the emphasis depending on whether you are applying to a research-intensive master's (emphasise intellectual and research content) or a taught bachelor's (emphasise academic preparation and genuine interest in the field).
Open with your intellectual or academic focus — not your life story
Begin with the specific intellectual question or academic field that draws you to this programme. You have limited words and the faculty's attention is finite. Do not open with biography — open with substance.
Connect your academic background to the programme
Describe the specific parts of your prior education that prepare you for this programme. IB Extended Essay topic, relevant coursework, research experience — these are your evidence. Be precise about what you studied and what it taught you.
Name specific aspects of this programme's curriculum, research profile, or faculty that are relevant to your interests. Show that you have read the programme description — not just the university's homepage.
Explain, honestly and specifically, where this degree leads you. Research career, policy work, industry role, further academic study — any direction is valid if it is plausible given your background and the programme's profile.
Close concisely. Do not end with generic statements about being a good fit or your commitment to excellence. End on the intellectual substance — the last thing the faculty remembers reading should be the content of your thinking, not performance language.
Writing Samples and Portfolios at Stockholm University
Some programmes in the humanities, social sciences, or creative fields request a writing sample or portfolio as part of the supplementary application. Requirements are always programme-specific — always check the programme's admissions page before preparing these materials.
Some humanities and social science programmes request a sample of prior academic writing — typically a research paper, extended essay, or thesis excerpt of 2,000–5,000 words. Submit your strongest, most relevant piece. Your IB Extended Essay on a relevant topic is a natural candidate.
Creative programmes in fine arts, design, or film may request a portfolio of work. Format and content requirements are specified on the programme page. Always follow the stated format — deviating from instructions is an early negative signal.
Some research-intensive master's programmes request a brief research statement or proposal — a description of the research question you wish to pursue and how it connects to the department's research profile. This is different from a motivation letter and requires specific preparation.
Providing Additional Context in Your Application
Unlike US Common App applications, the universityadmissions.se system does not include a formal additional information section where you can provide narrative context for your application. If you have significant contextual factors to communicate — a gap in your academic record, a medical condition that affected your grades, extenuating circumstances — the appropriate channel is the motivation letter (for programmes that require one) or a direct communication to the programme admissions team.
If your transcript shows a significant grade anomaly or a gap year, and you are writing a motivation letter, address it briefly and factually. Do not dwell on it — acknowledge, explain concisely, and move on to your academic strengths.
If significant personal circumstances affected your academic performance, you may contact the programme admissions team directly by email before or alongside your application. Keep the communication factual and concise.
If you have achievements that do not fit the standard application framework — published research, significant competition results, or professional work — include them in your CV (where a CV is required) or reference them briefly in your motivation letter.
How Stockholm University Departments Evaluate the Motivation Letter
For programmes with supplementary selection, the motivation letter is read by academic staff in the department — typically the programme director or a small admissions committee. They are subject experts evaluating whether you are intellectually prepared and genuinely interested in their programme. They are not admissions counsellors trained to evaluate 'holistic' narratives.
Does this applicant understand what we study?
The first question a SU academic asks when reading a motivation letter is whether the applicant has a realistic and specific understanding of the programme. Generic letters that could apply to any university fail this test immediately.
The second question is whether the applicant's described academic background genuinely prepares them for the programme's demands. A letter that accurately describes relevant prior learning is more credible than one that overstates academic readiness.
Is this direction plausible and coherent?
The third question is whether the applicant's stated goals and direction make sense given their background and the programme's profile. Coherence between past study, present application, and future direction is what the academic is looking for.
What Makes a Stockholm University Motivation Letter Stand Out
In a system where most admitted applicants have strong grade profiles, the motivation letter — where it is required — can be the differentiating factor. Here is what separates the letters that work from the letters that don't.
Naming a specific faculty member's research and explaining why it connects to your intellectual interest — this signals genuine research and serious intent
Describing your IB Extended Essay or a specific piece of academic work in concrete terms, not as a generic achievement
Articulating the specific intellectual questions you cannot yet answer and framing the degree as your route to engaging with them
Demonstrating familiarity with the programme's specific course structure or research methods
Writing with precision and intellectual confidence — not over-claiming expertise you don't have, but not understating genuine academic engagement either
Motivation Letter Mistakes That Cost Stockholm University Applications
Writing a generic letter and submitting the same one to multiple programmes — SU faculty recognise generic language immediately and it signals exactly the opposite of genuine interest
Spending the majority of the letter on personal biography and life experiences rather than academic interests and intellectual direction
Exceeding the stated word or page limit — it signals inability to follow instructions
Using emotive language ('passion', 'dream', 'make the world a better place') without substantive intellectual content to support it
Failing to read the specific programme requirements — some departments want specific sections in a specific order; deviating from the format is an early signal of inattention
Submitting the motivation letter through universityadmissions.se instead of directly to the department — many SU programmes have separate submission processes
Applying to a programme without verifying you meet the subject prerequisites — no motivation letter can compensate for a missing required subject
Assuming the motivation letter is not required when it is, or that it is required when it is not — always read the programme page
The Stockholm University Application Writing Timeline
When universityadmissions.se opens for the following autumn's entry, research which programmes you will apply to and what each one requires. Check prerequisites, supplementary criteria, and motivation letter requirements for each programme individually.
October–November — Draft your motivation letter(s)
Begin drafting your motivation letter early. Research the programme's faculty and research groups. Draft a letter for each programme that requires one — do not plan to adapt a single letter.
Revise for precision, concision, and specificity. Have someone with academic or admissions experience read the letter critically. Aim for a final version by mid-December.
January 15 — Submit your universityadmissions.se application
Submit all required documents through the national portal by 15 January. Separately submit any motivation letters directly to departments by their specific deadlines — confirm these dates for each programme.
How Tychr Supports Stockholm University Applicants
Stockholm University's application seems simpler than a US application on the surface — no Common App, no supplementals, no interviews. In practice, the complexity is different: knowing which programme's prerequisites you need, understanding how the merit conversion system works, and writing a motivation letter that genuinely engages a Swedish academic requires knowledge and preparation.
Tychr reviews your IB or A-Level subject choices against the specific prerequisite requirements of your target programmes at SU — in Year 10-11, when there is still time to adjust your subject selection. Discovering a missing prerequisite after applying is too late.
Tychr provides analysis of the merit score cut-offs for your target programmes and an honest assessment of where your academic profile sits relative to admitted cohorts — giving you a realistic picture of your admissions prospects before you apply.
Where your programme requires a motivation letter, Tychr coaches you through the Stockholm University format: a structured brainstorming process, programme-specific research, draft review, and refinement to a final version that engages the department's academic content genuinely.
Tychr advises on Round 1 vs Round 2 strategy, document preparation, and the universityadmissions.se process — ensuring your application is complete, correctly submitted, and timed for the best available places.
What Effective Stockholm University Motivation Letters Achieve
We cannot publish verbatim extracts from students' letters, but the following examples illustrate the structural and strategic difference between letters that work and letters that don't.
Environmental Science — Effective Approach
A student applied to the MSc Environmental Science programme. Her letter opened with the specific policy gap in Swedish climate regulation she had researched for her IB Extended Essay, named the department's climate policy research group, and connected both to her goal of working in EU environmental law. The faculty noted this as one of the strongest letters in the round.
A student applying to the MSc Economics programme described his undergraduate thesis on informal labour markets in Brazil, connected it to the department's research on institutional economics, and articulated a specific research question he wanted to pursue. The specificity — a named research question, a named department research area — made the letter distinctive.
A student submitted a motivation letter describing how he had 'always loved technology' and wanted to 'solve important problems in the world'. The letter contained no reference to the programme's curriculum, no specific academic background, and no plausible connection between his prior study and his stated goals. He was not admitted, despite having a competitive grade profile.
Motivation Letter Considerations for International Students Applying to Stockholm University
International students approaching the Stockholm University motivation letter from a US, UK, or other application culture often bring assumptions that don't transfer cleanly to the Swedish context.
US-trained applicants are accustomed to personal statements that balance narrative, identity, and achievement. The SU motivation letter is not that document. If you have been writing US essays, consciously shift gear: less personal narrative, more intellectual and academic content. The faculty is not asking who you are as a person — they are asking whether you understand and are prepared for their programme.
UCAS personal statements are closer to SU motivation letters — academic content, programme-specific reasoning, and forward direction. The main difference is specificity: a UCAS statement covers multiple programmes simultaneously, while a SU motivation letter should be written specifically for one programme at one department.
If your IB Extended Essay is on a topic related to your target programme, it is your strongest piece of evidence for genuine academic engagement. Describe what you researched, what you found, and how it connects to the questions this programme addresses. Swedish academics understand the IB EE format and recognise it as meaningful prior research experience.
Language precision for non-native English writers
The motivation letter is an English-language academic document reviewed by academics for whom precise writing matters. If English is not your strongest language, invest time in editing for clarity and correctness. A letter with grammatical errors or imprecise phrasing is a weaker document than a shorter, clearer one.
Does every Stockholm University programme require a motivation letter?
No. Many programmes — particularly at bachelor's level — admit students entirely on the basis of their merit score derived from grades and English test scores. Motivation letters are required primarily for competitive or research-intensive master's programmes and some selective bachelor's programmes. Check the individual programme page on su.se.
Most motivation letters are submitted separately to the department — not through universityadmissions.se. Each programme's admissions page specifies the submission method, format, and deadline. Do not assume the portal collects the motivation letter.
Typically 500–1,000 words unless the department specifies otherwise. Some programmes set a strict page or word limit. Concise, well-structured letters are preferable to long, discursive ones. Aim for clarity over comprehensiveness.
For most taught programmes at bachelor's and master's level, no. Research master's programmes or programmes with a clear research track may welcome a reference. Never submit one unsolicited — always check what the programme specifically asks for.
Can I use AI tools to write my motivation letter?
Stockholm University does not formally prohibit AI assistance in application documents. However, AI-generated motivation letters are typically generic, structurally identical across applicants, and recognisable to experienced readers. A letter that reflects your genuine intellectual journey and specific academic interests will always be more persuasive — and more honest. The point of the letter is to demonstrate that you specifically have thought seriously about this programme.
How do I find out if my specific programme requires a motivation letter?
Go directly to the programme's page on su.se — not universityadmissions.se. Look for sections titled 'how to apply', 'selection criteria', or 'documents required'. If the information is unclear, email the programme coordinator directly. SU departments are generally responsive to direct enquiries.
My programme has a motivation letter deadline in February — but the universityadmissions.se deadline is 15 January. What do I do?
Submit your universityadmissions.se application by 15 January (including all required documents through the portal). Then submit your motivation letter directly to the department by their separate February deadline. These are two separate processes — the portal submission does not include the motivation letter.
Is there a personal statement requirement for undergraduate admission to Stockholm University?
No. Most undergraduate programmes at Stockholm University admit entirely on academic merit score — no personal statement, no essay, no interview. Some competitive bachelor's programmes have supplementary selection criteria that include a motivation letter, but this is not universal. Admission to most bachelor's programmes is determined solely by your academic qualification grade profile.
